More exercise and mental stimulation by you playing with it, your dog is bored as frick. Some dogs are just natural diggers as well. Best thing to do in that case is to give them an area to dig like a kids sandbox and encourage digging there with treats/toys hidden in it.

I have a GSP that does this too. I think it is a mixture of a lack of exercise, and the rodents that like to burrow around in the yard. It is always next to something, so I'm sure it's the rodents. I haven't begun the war on them yet, but it's brewing.

Keep his nails clipped until he breaks the habit - pain in the butt - however, it works with some.

The other option is to have someone watching him for a while with a "johnny on the spot" negative reinforcement.

There's not much more I enjoy then sitting back and watching a dog dig a good hole.

My Jack Russell used to dig holes all over the yard. Then on a couple occasions he left moles on my back doorstep. Realized he was digging with purpose. Diggers gonna dig.

Cayenne chilli powder and when you fill in his hole. Fill it with feces, dogs will usually leave it alone.
