Correct. 8-10 miles of road had to be built for access to the bridge on the New Roads side and another 4-5 on the St Grancisville side.

Not quite so fast (pun intended). The ferry was much north of Audubon, starting on the New Roads side coming off Ferry Road and running NNE across the river to near Bayou Sara under St. Francisville itsel

St Francisville historical group fought the bridge being built where the ferry crossed because they did not want to see it from the "historical" downtown.

The bridge conveniently connects to significant electrical infrastructure plants. Some times critical infrastructure has nothing to do with traffic.

It’s fine to have a bridge there. There was no crossing between Baton Rouge and Natchez. The issue is them dragging their feet for so long on another Baton Rouge bridge.
