The building has a good deal of environmental issues (asbestos) to solve before demolition could occur.

Harris County removed the vast majority of the asbestos - containing materials over 2 years ago.

If any city is capable of getting something cool done for this, it's Houston. Keep some semblance of the structure standing and do a park or amphitheater of some sort.

It is the political equivalent of the BR Loop. Everybody has a plan but no one wants to be the one who's name gets attached. The one person who could actually make something out of it (Tillman Fertita) won't touch it because gambling is illegal.

I've always heard that the Astrodome could fit inside the Superdome. Having been in both building, the Superdome is definitely bigger

Good times there. Astros games.

My brother and I wearing our Oilers' ponchos watching the games with the leaky roof

That and the demolition derbies.

Remember going to see a game when I was 10 in the Dome. I was blown away.

Yeah, that place was awesome. We lived in Pasadena in the late '60s to mid '70s. Plenty of trips to the Dome and AstroWorld.

Most people don't know this but there is an underground river flowing under the astrodome that keeps a constant cool temperature. That could be used to cool the building.

What kind of river? Like the one that brings you to the Land of the Lost?

I don't know if it could fit inside the Superdome, that seems like a stretch, but the Superdome if most definitely bigger. The Astrodome was first and was sort of a proof of concept. It doesn't seem that big from the outside because it is half underground.

These guys snuck inside in 2015. There was still gear in the media control rooms down to stick notes on the equipment.

non-air conditioned event space

Dealbreaker.

It would be one thing if it were in a city with a milder climate, but Houston gets hot as hell. Air conditioning is a must.
