How much of the blame for this so called epedemic belongs on the doctors and the pain pill companies and how much blame belongs on a society who has created a "victim" mentality? I've never been addicted to any type of pain pills, so I may just be naive in my thinking, but to me, if I noticed that I was still needing opoids after my surgery or whatever caused me to have them in the first place, my first action would to be to look for some kind of help, not go looking for heroin or whatever else. Just my opinion...

You think very logically in your hypothetical addiction. Well done.

I think they can be enablers in a way. By giving refills when they know they probably shouldn't. Its the junkies fault they got addicted to pills anyways.

I agree. Just like it's all those illiterate undereducated kids faults that they're stupid right?

It's not the horrendous system or the school board corruption or the apathetic teachers, or the lack of parental guidance.

Nope. It's those dumbass kid's faults. They should just learn better.

I doubt that copping heroin is usually the "first action", but there is definitely poor judgment involved if you find yourself shooting smack, agree there.

My thinking though is that people can get addicted to a whole host of things. Gambling, drinking, porn, etc..... In all those other cases, we don't cry out that it's the casinos fault or it's the beer or porn companies fault. So why is it different for this addiction? Why is it any person other than the junkies fault for this case?

LMFAO. The "doctors" as a group hold no responsibility. They are taught by medical schools largely funded by pharmaceutical companies. So what do you think the curriculum is gong to tell them to do? Interest their patients in diet, exercise and the health of the human frame? Or prescribe medications? The Rx epidemic is larger than opioids.

The same pharmaceutical companies largely fund the politicians to get pro-Rx laws passed and the advertising to domesticate society.

If you went to see your doctor and they told you to go home and gave you a complete list of natural ways to become healthy, would you do it? Or would you call that doctor a quack bc "You paid to get well and they didn't write you any Rxs!"?

I don't remember my parents or teachers ever having to tell me to stay away from heroin or swallowing pain pills when I wasn't actually in pain, yet I managed to do it. Crazy how that works.

Considering that physicians are trained to diagnose, to imply that the same group will blindly follow the RX directive is a bit contradictory.

Back on topic, I can't speak to such levels of addiction and dependency. I have never been there, so my mind cannot relate. I consider myself very fortunate in that respect.

I was addicted to pain pills but didn't really abuse them. The problem with long term use of opiods for chronic pain is you build up a tolerance to them and you have to take an ever-increasing minimum doeage regularly or you go through hell.

I never crushed/snorted/injected them and never bought them off the street. But, I had a scrip for 4 lortab 10s per day and I took them whether I needed to or not. The addiction became mental and physical.

I did everything right and still became an addict. I knew where it was going, so I went through 2 weeks of hell and started eating right and working out. It is on the user to quit, but had my doctor talked to me about eating an anti inflammatory diet, I may have never spent those years on opiods.

You're comparing a gambling addiction to a physical addiction and dependence on a substance.

Nailed it.

I remember back in the 90s when OxyContin was being developed. They marketed the drug to doctors as a miracle drug that could be used to treat pretty much anything with low dependency and minimal side effects. There were incentives to doctors who prescribed it and politicians were paid off to keep from passing laws regulating it. That all lasted until too many people started dying from this shite and now we have people who had their supply cut off because doctors are scared to prescribe it and those people are now looking for other means to stay high. That's how we get the heroin and fentanyl epidemic.
