There is a stairway to a landing whose only purpose is to be for attic entry (no bedrooms, bathrooms, entry or exit, etc) - it is not 36" wide. That's the concern and our inspection is tomorrow.
Is it a finished attic or partially finished?

The last time I saw a 2x2 anything in residential use was on the trusses of the old style sardine can metal roofs of mobile homes from the late 70's and early 80's. So many of them opened right up during Rita
I inspected a small home in Lake Charles that appeared to be part of a WW2 build. It was after a fire, if memory serves and had 2x2 studs throughout and some kind of paper type press paneling that require a complete gut of the home.

Partially. No Sheetrock, all joists and rafters exposed.

Unfortunately with BR DPW it depends on who does the inspection. What gets flagged and what passes varies from inspector to inspector there.
I'm doing an addition in EBR that also has just a small amount of renovation on the old home. Recently failed an electrical inspection because a closet light in a bedroom we didn't touch is too big for the space it's in.

i like to use paneling ripped into 2" strips for studs. i laminate two strips, of course, because only an idiot would just use one strip. not strong enough...

I get a good bit of business writing sealed letters for builders to the parish building inspector because he is an arrogant Mr Know it All. Some of this dude's code interpretations are hilarious... or would be if if wasn't costing people money.

I guess this is what I'm most concerned with - having to incur additional cost and a modified floor plan in an area we didn't touch.

Result:
The inspector did notice the narrow stairs but said that since we weren't touching the stairs it was not a concern to him.
