You're right. Those are Iron Crosses. But the Iron Cross predates Germany. The guy in the picture is Prussian Generalfeldmarschall Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher.

The P-51 pilot shown a few pages earlier is George Preddy. He was the highest scoring Mustang Pilot of WW2. Killed, I believe, Jan. 1, 1945.

Yeah, Prussia was a precursor to Germany.

At that time it would have been Bavaria or Saxony.
