Bonus, what happened moments after this picture was taken?

Russians at the fall of Berlin?

Was it when the picture of the swastika/eagle symbol was blown up?

Looks like Russian soldiers with some Nazi stuff. I guess this is after they entered Berlin?

Those are Red Army soldiers and those are German Standards. But where are they? What is going on? And what are they about to do?

Really it was not until after the war was over and the Allies were dividing up Germany that the Western Allies finally realized that "Uncle Joe" was not as nice as we thought. The division of Berlin followed by Soviet moves that eventually led to their full blockade of Berlin was really what showed that the days of being friends with the Soviets were over. Meanwhile the Germans were caught in the middle and telling he Western Allies "see, we tried to tell you".

I have no doubt. It would have been interesting to see former enemies become allies. For some reason, when you said that a book that I read years agos ("The Devils Guard") comes to mind but had nothing to do with your statement...odd, I know.

They're Russians but they're not in Berlin.

No. The picture you're talking about is this, right?

That's actually the giant stadium in Nuremberg where the Nazi's had held their rallys...

As for blowing it up, that was done by American troops.

I see. It was just a guess...other than that, no clue although it will become obvious once you say it.

Well back to the original picture of the Red Army soldiers.

They're in Moscow. It's May 1945 and they are celebrating the first Victory Day parade. Those German Standards were rushed back from Germany where they were captured so the Soviets could parade them through red square. After the standards are paraded through Red Square and are lowered before Stalin and the Politburo, they are cast down at the base of Lenin's tomb....

That's in Red Square - St. Basil's is behind that line of troops - that is the fort on the Kremlin Wall with the clock.

Cool. We've gone and started a game where you find any picture and get folks to try and guess things of historic importance about them.

Not a bad guess, but no. Lusitania was much larger.
