From the looks of the tracks/wheels, I would say some sort of German vehicle. Doesn't look like a Panzer/Tiger frame, maybe some sort Panther made like a flakpanzer?

You're all over it. I'll go warm up my lunch and let you think about it another minute or two.

Alright. That tanks has American markings but it's actually a German Pz Mk. V Panther made up by the Germans to look like an American M10 tank destroyer. They used these in the Battle of the Bulge in a special commando unit disguised as American troops.

Operation Greif

Here's a real M10

And here's a Panther made up to look like an M10

And they did a really good job of it. At first glance, my mind immediately said that's a tank destroyer.

Since we are on a certain theme, what unit patch is this?

That's the divisional insignia of the 5th SS Panzer Division "Wiking". It was made of mostly of non-German men who volunteered for the SS.

(One thing many don't realize is that tens of thousands of men from across Europe were more than glad to sign up to help the Germans fight the Soviets. It was against German law for them to serve in the Wehrmacht so these men instead signed up for the Waffen SS.)

There was an entirely too creepy vibe from the SS - they were a paramilitary cult, just a well-equipped and well-funded one. They swore personal oaths to Hitler at midnight ceremonies, resembling pagan religious ceremonies.

That was their aim. Himmler was obsessed with the Occult as were many high ranking Nazis. Their eventual goal was to not only stamp out any trace of Judaism but to eventually do away with Christianity as well and replace it with a sort of neo-Nordic paganism.

German Gewehr 43. It was their production semi-auto rifle.

Ensign Gay was the only survivor on that mission.

Definitely not gay.

I believe he was the rear gunner on one of the Devastators that was shot down while attacking the Jap fleet. He actually spent the rest of the battle floating in the ocean with what amounted to a front row seat of the destruction of 4 Jap carriers.
