Our reenacting battalions major is the type to go on such a tour and talk with them about all things about the battle, and what they know, and "Did you read so and so's book about artillery pieces in the late stage of the war," and talk about arbitrary historical anecdotes on the topic...then go to a British territory in the carribean and talk to them about the particular caliber and era muskets they're holding and different wars they've been used in.
Dude's a machine.

Sid Meier's Gettysburg was a fun computer game when it came out.

I went a few years ago and had a guide for a 2 hour tour.
The guy was incredible. He told me his level, whatever it was, take a test covering every battle. It is monstrous. He volunteered as a retiree at 65 and had been doing it 19 years.
Any park ranger in the US system should be able to know everything about every aspect of the park, history, geology, topography, names, dates. It’s pretty damn impressive.

We hired one of these guides for a personal tour, also. She drove our car and was very knowledgeable about the battle. She explained the procedure to become an official battlefield guide and, yes, it was quite detailed and difficult to pass the test. Everywhere I wanted to stop and look closer, she was completely cooperative. For some reason, I was particularly struck by the witness tree below Little Round Top and actually being able to touch it. Just to sit there at Devil's Den and take the time to process everything that happened there was humbling. I will do this again. Once was not enough.
