quote:

Latin remained the sole language of the Roman Rite until the Second Vatican Council returned to the original instinct of Christianity that people should worship in a language they understand.

The Mass being said in Latin is part of it, the fact that the Mass as done traditionally has the Sacrifice as the focus of the service and not the priest as its greatest benefit.

I do think there is a place for the Mass in the common or vernacular language but the preparation and consecration needs to be turned to its proper place with the focus on the Sacrifice and not the priest.

Edit: There is Latin service/ community which Archbishop Aymond assisted setting up in the Covington/ Mandeville area. It is packed with young families and people and the priest is awesome. Also the seminary for New Orleans is currently having the seminarians learning Latin.

Our Lady of Sorrows. It's an SSPX church which is a polarizing group within conservative Catholic circles.

Despite everything, the Seminary has never stopped teaching Latin, and it celebrates its centenary in two years.

The Second Vatican Council actually AFFIRMED Latin as the language of liturgy and gave it "pride of place." The fathers of the council in 1962 actually laughed when it was suggested that the vernacular would come to dominate. The Constitution on Sacred Liturgy (Sacrosanctam Concilium) only allowed the vernacular where the local ordinary (the bishop of the diocese) felt that there was a particular, pastoral need. The fathers of the council gave an inch. "Reformers" took a couple miles and here we are.

St. Patrick in New Orleans has at least one if not two per week (Rev. Garrett O'Brien, J.C.L., pastor) St. Stephen on Napoleon Avenue has one at the 12:00 Mass once a month (Rev. Msgr. Christopher Nalty, J.C.L., pastor.) Rev. Damian Zablocki is the Chaplain for the new Our Lady of Mount Carmel community on the northshore and parochial vicar at Most Holy Trinity. There are other priests in the diocese who also have faculties to pray the 1962 Mass in the Extraordinary Form.

Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Kenner may also celebrate the Extraordinary Form. If so, that would be Fr. Charles Dussuoy.
