If you are looking for something recent the last werewolf was a good read.

Swimming to Atlantis by Charles Hebert or Tin Roof Blowdown by James Lee Burke if you want a good New Orleans-themed read (pre- and post- Katrina, respectively).
Cormac McCarthy's No Country for Old Men and The Road are fantastic reads as well, even if you have already seen the movies.
The Hobbit is probably my favorite Tolkien book, if you want to disappear into that kind of fantasy (and it's significantly more action-per-page than the LotR trilogy, until you get >1/2 way through.
Lastly, before I bore you to death, The Virginian by Owen Wister was the first Western novel, and it should be free (it's part of the Public Domain, I do believe). It's a bit of a tough read, though.

Ender's Game is a good book and a simple read.

Stranded on the distant planet Tschai, young Adam Reith is the sole survivor of a space mission who discovers the world is inhabited--not only by warring alien cultures, but human slaves as well, taken early in Earth's history. Reith must find a way off planet to warn the Earth of Tschai's deadly existence.

Also James Clavell's Shogun is pretty good. Kind of long and not the easiest read but he details everything. I enjoyed it. And I read the next 3 book in the series. The 2nd one, Tai-Pan is okay, but I really liked the 3rd one, Gai-Jin.

Any of the Pendergast books by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. I recommend starting with the Helen Trilogy: Fever Dream, Cold Vengeance, and Two Graves. Some of the best books I've ever read, and I'm a heavy reader.
