The article implies the admin didn't steal money from their own benefit, but rather lied to get money for the school.

That's right.

The school had built up a crazy high amount of debt over the years.

correct

that's what ultimately led to the school losing its accreditation... not the president & financial aid officer getting charged (& ultimately pleading guilty)

she knew the school was in deep shite and was apparently trying to do everything... legal and illegal... to keep it afloat

when they realized the amount of illegal stuff that was needed to keep it going... it was too late and the school was dead

ETA: can you imagine a school of higher learning with an enrollment of 44? not 4,400... just 44... less than 4 dozen students

I wonder what those 44 students think a degree from Morris Brown will get them?

Without accreditation, those degrees are worthless.

I dunno, maybe this is the beginning of an incredible turnaround story. The HBCUs in Atlanta are a culturally significant part of that city's identity.

I know of a college in Dallas that's been going for years apparently without accreditation... don't know how they keep their doors open

this particular school used to have a football team but now use its football field as an "organic farm"

Not excusing the behavior, but there is a difference.

She was drawing a salary and keeping her job by defrauding the government (keeping the school solvent), there is no difference, she was benefiting from the theft.

Plus there were scores of counts against her and she was allowed to plead guilty to only one, we don't know the full story of the misappropriation and how much damage was done.
