Times have seriously changed. I took three buses, starting at 13 years-old, to get to school in NOLA. I wouldn’t have my kid doing that now.
And, by the way, kids do disappear. It’s kind of scary to think someone can pull up next to a walking kid, pull them into a vehicle, and take off. It happens. It has nothing to do with hot weather. Times have seriously changed.

Yeah, times are safer now.

Overall, sure. But currently you have a major problem with under or straight up unreported crime in some major metros since that kind of thing is racist and those in power will not be bullied. I certainly have no intentions of watching my kids' every move, but there are some places where a little extra attention is warranted.

Our daughter was 5 when we moved to New Mexico. We have friends near San Antonio. They literally begged us, with tears in their eyes, not to move to New Mexico with our blue eyed blond haired daughter because "she will be kidnapped in a matter of days and sold into slavery in Mexico". They were sincere....crazier than shite house rats but sincere in their insanity.
They also told me once that if I lived as close to Mexico as they did I would understand the border problem better. At the time we lived about 165 miles from 2 border crossings into Juarez, with a population of about 1.5 million, while they lived about 185 miles from one border crossing into Piedras Negras with a population of about 150K LOL. They nearly had stroke when I mentioned we went to Juarez fairly regularly and were terrified when we went to Tijuana from San Diego. Life is full of risk. Living life in fear is not living.
