Yes. Was dirt poor with X hundred dollars to my name as a married adult in January 2012. Rough times. Had to tap into a hustling bone I didn't have in order to make it.
Pulled through and now doing pretty good. And now putting that hustling bone to good use.

I've never for a bunch of reasons.
I've been smart about decisions.
I've been lucky about decisions.
I've always lived within my means.
My wife has always lived within her means.
Both our parents taught us how to manage money properly.
If we want something- we save until we can pay cash (for the most part - we have borrowed from the bank but have ALWAYS paid it back early) which makes you appreciate what you have bought and you take care of it.
We are frugal - yet we can't take it with us so we enjoy.
We put a lot away for the children.

I didn't have to.
No one has to.
I've had years where (investment-wise) I lost money on paper but it's not a loss until you cash out.
Each year I've always had a tax debt to the IRS since the early '80s.
