I was laid off in 1989. I had already determined it looked like the company that hired me didn't really need a full time engineer and had met one of the owners of a company doing control systems (through my job at the time) that had expressed an interest in me going to work for them (I was 6 months out of college). Already had an interview and was expecting an offer any day when the company announced upcoming layoffs. I advised them I would likely be leaving so if it came to me or someone else, pick me since I may be leaving anyway. My boss told me that was good because I was gonna be one of the people laid off(as I said, I saw it coming and have no doubts he was telling me the truth). Got laid off with 2 weeks severance right before Christmas. They paid me for an additional week or so to help program a machine they were developing. Started at the engineering firm between Christmas and the new year for a 50% increase in pay.
Best thing that ever happened because I really found my calling in this sector of engineering. But getting laid off still affected my thinking for years to come, even though I really missed zero paychecks.
On a side note, that company called me to provide service to them on and off for decades after that.
Update your resume on online job sites, even if it's just dates of employment, and that typically generates notices to employers who are looking and recruiters.
Good luck, hope you make it through. If you have a good relationship with your boss, you may inquire if you should be looking, they probably have a real good idea who is on the block or at least who is not.

Yes, back in 2006. I'm in the downstream side of the Oil and Gas industry. I packed all of my things, loaded them in my truck, drove to one of our competitors offices in the area and had another job within 1hr of being laid off.

I feel this isn't the case anymore. Oil isn't as mobile

I quit a company in 2006 and was back on the same location making more than double 2 weeks later. This luxury is long, long gone now in the industry. You pull this now and you may as well retire. Since 2015 the majority of companies have RIF on average 50% of their employees. Managers have a wealth of talent to chose from and for cheap rates.

Years ago, by Reginelli's. I worked there a week as a cook when the manager pulled me to the side and informed me that I was being let go because they got lucky with this pizza chef from Chicago and they had to bring him on. Well, a week later I go in to get my pay check and the only new hire was this 17 year old eye candy.

Yes. My company was acquired by Microsoft in 2008. I got absorbed into Microsoft org and stayed in there as team lead for a while. IN 2010 My cool, previous boss called me and told my new boss would be coming to lay me off in about 6 weeks so I was prepared.
Microsoft had to pay me a $30,000 retention bonus and 6 months severance so I was in good shape.

Negative. My wife's salary covers about half of our expenses, so our savings could be stretched if needed

Yes. Had two companies relocate and I was laid off/ not retained both times as an engineer. The second time, I fricking started fishing for a living and I put a stop to that shite.
No more layoffs for me

Once, for family reasons. I took what I learned from them and used it. No hard feelings.
