Some of the locomotive downsizing is due to the acquisition of newer, more fuel efficient units.

I never worked for them but I did have an interview with CSX years ago and the guy told me to keep a picture of my wife and kids on me because I would forget what they looked like and keep my dog chained up because it would forget who I was and try to bite me when I came home

Apparently you have to sacrifice almost all your time to the railroad but you would make decent money and their retirement is pretty good, or at least used to be.
