I haven't been through it with Southwest however I have with American. It took a month to get the refund back on the tickets and 2 more weeks for the seat upgrade refund.
all you people need to learn to live up to your end of the deal, them planes don't fly themselves, pilots gots to eat!

Had to cancel a flight last year do to tearing my meniscus and have to have surgery two weeks before my flight, plus it was a golf trip I was going on. Delta issued a credit to my skymiles account which was not 100% of the amount of the original ticket.I had to call them with all the Doctor, Hospital and surgery date info before the credit was issued , but it was done with in 2-3 days of them getting this info. I also had to use the credit with in 11 months of the old flight date or I would lose it.

Southwest has pretty great customer service, but here is a tip for future travel with them.
Purchase points for the price of the ticket.
Use the points to buy the tickets.
Then you can cancel the flight without penalty

So I had booked my trip through hotels.com and some seat upgrades through Delta. I had the $50 trip insurance with hotels.com so that took care of everything on their end. Delta had me taken care of in less than five minutes. Not sure if the terrorist attacks changed my situation or not. All in all, I'm only out $50.

Also, for the OP
If they booked via credit card, it may offer protection for these kind of situations

But if you're willing to take a credit to be used within a year of booking, that should be easily done by any Southwest rep you can get on the phone.
This. You don't even need to talk to a rep. I do it online and have never had an issue. This is for the cheap"wanna get away" fares too. Full price fares are fully refundable at any time before flight I thought.
