Simple, they need to move to a 401k like taxpayers
Added: Pensions are from a time when govt workers got paid less than private sector, so the retirement was the "carrot". Since that is no longer true, time to move them to a similar plan as the people paying their salaries and retirement.

Worked my arse off in both my state and federal jobs.
I was a salaried employee in both, always exceeding 40 hrs per week. It was probably closer to 50-60 hrs per week even though payroll records showed 40. The additional working hours were expected as part of my labor. No additional financial compensation was offered for additional labor hours.
There were slack asses who could not show up on time and expected that to be overlooked. It was never overlooked. Administrators wrote them up and it was handled privately. Once there was sufficient cause from giving employees an opportunity to correct their shortcomings, they had an opportunity to resign or be fired if the behavior continued.
Ultimately it was all worth it for a rewarding job that benefited the public that enabled me to retire comfortably at age 55.

Cool let’s start with the biggest abusers of the taxpayers, cops and firefighters, then

Pretty awesome, drink mountain dews and play video games while eating pizza and chips all day.
Of course I do exercise also to keep my body in shape… luckily I can bench press like 1000lbs or something like that obviously… but yeah pretty awesome job

I know many more people want to leave the government than the private sector.
I worked for the state in IT for a few years right out of college in 1999-2001, so a long time ago. Back then the pay just wasn't competitive, and it was too tempting at 23-24 yrs old to move to the private sector for like a 60% raise.
We worked but it was pretty slow paced. I used to connect to my home pc when it was slow and download pirated software, movies and music from newsgroups

I'm not excluding them. Most work 20 years and retire in their early 40s and then work another job like school cop or security and pile in the cash.
I have 2 police officers in my neighborhood, both have new vehicles regularly, boats and go on vacation all the time.
