Did some research.
A colt becomes a stallion and a filly becomes a mare.
Apparently they are called yearlings from age 1 to 2. Are they (colt and philly) both called yearlings for that year or would you call it a philly or colt yearling to differentiate?
Then at age 2 you start calling them a mare or stallion?
So you were just using the term "pony" as a affectionate term not technically right?

Nice.
eta:I didn't know the term "yearling" covered more than a the deer in that movie.

So they're called colt or filly until age 5?

Let the record show I am not the one who started this thread killing pony talk.

Really? Candidly, I though it was strictly breed driven.
A Shetland or Welsh pony would be called a pony regardless of size. If you had a freakishly large Shetland pony, I thought it would still be called a Shetland pony. Likewise I thought a horse breed would just be called a smallish horse if it failed to reach horse-size.
Interesting. The more you know..

Nope. My american saddlebred was technically a pony at 14.2. Had his pony card. Strictly size related. Though I doubt a Shetland or welsh would ever get big enough to be a horse.

Is "Pony" a bad word now like "Fake News".
Have to see what words are off limits today.
