There are some decent public options north side. Pine Trace, or further north, Devil's Ridge or Boulder Point. I don't know the west side well, Tanglewood, Idyl Wild, and Lyon Oaks are OK. Of course, if you can get into Oakland Hills or Birmingham, good for you. Here is a SE Michigan list. Some of these are really garbage.

Oakland Hills Country Club. It has hosted the U.S. Open a few times and the Ryder Cup a few years back. The PGA still hosts tournaments there every couple of years.
