I just got back.
Things I enjoyed:
LaJolla - check out Houndstooth and George's. Also did LaJolla kayak tour and snorkling. Snorkling in the kelp forest is baddass. You get to see the sea lions close up, too - which smells bad, but is cool.
Ocean Beach - old school, retro, etc. - I went to a biker bar and I swear the Sons of Anarchy cast was there in costume, but they were authentic. Kbars and all.
Coronado - gotta see the Del Coronado - one of the iconic hotels in the US. Have a cocktail in the bar.
Old Town is okay.
Gaslamp has some great restaurants. My favorite was Water Grill.
I went to the zoo because everyone says go to the zoo. It is a fricking zoo, people. Bunch of kids crying, strollers and the rest of the hoi paolloy in long lines. It is probably nicer than any zoo, but still a zoo nonetheless.
Petco Park is in Gaslamp and I would have gone to a game, but the Padres were on a road trip.
Sunset Cliffs is a great place to watch the sunset, but I would prefer a sunset at LaJolla where you can enjoy a cocktail on the cove.
That's my take on things/places I enjoyed. I rented a Mustang GT convertible for getting around. San Diego does a very good job of managing traffic and the roads, neutral grounds are all so clean. I freaking loved it. Have Fun!

Point Loma is real nice. Drive out to Cabrillo and you might get lucky enough to catch an SSN coming in off of a cruise. Torrey Pines and Del Mar are also nice areas.

Hodad's burgers in Ocean Beach. Walk around some of the beach towns like del Mar, Padres game, downtown breweries, zoo obviously,go to the hotel del for a drink, sunset cliffs (climb down when tide is low, especially at sunset). Drive out to Joshua tree.
San Diego is absolutely the best city in the country in my opinion in terms of natural beauty, things to do, and weather.

Ok. Here goes. I lived in SD for many many years so I have an idea about what's going on. First things first, if you've never been to In n Out, now is the time. Get animal style fries. Second, you are going to be going to Escondido to go to Safari Park. It's incredible. While you are in Esco also go visit the Stone brewery. The giant hospital near it cost a billion dollars so if you get too wasted, you will be in great hands. For a beach, I recommend a beach called Windandsea beach in La Jolla. There is a reef close to the shore so the waves break very near the shoreline. But don't try to surf there because, I'm not kidding, you could die. If you want to try surfing go to La Jolla Shores and rent a board. Downtown SD is awesome so definitely go there. Go visit the Midway and walk around the coast. For food you should definitely try some Mexican food. Go to a place that ends in 'bertos and order some Carne asada fries or a California burrito. Also, enjoy the pristine freeways and see what good city planning looks like. Oh, if you want incredible views go to Fort Rosecrans national cemetery.

The Zoo is a must if you have kids IMO.
Also, there is a hidden speakeasy bar called Noble experiment which is a really cool place. You have to text a reservation a week in advance though, check it out on yelp, the front door is hidden in a fake keg wall.
La Jolla is a must see, it's absolutely beautiful.
For Dinner do yourself a favor and hit up Buon Apetito in Little Italy. Get the Filet al Pepe Verde, it is a HUGE piece of meat and absolutely delicious.
If you want to grab some nice Iranian food (i would recommend goign during lunch) try out Darband Fifth Avenue, it is fricking amazing.
Balboa Park is okay, they had a Rembrandt paiting on display when I went so that was cool.

Haha vista does suck pretty bad but it's where most of the breweries are located so they have that going for them.

Rented a house in La Jolla for a week over New Years so this is fresh in my mind. GPS "glider port" near La Jolla that was a must see. These guys jump off a cliff that's hundreds of feet high. DONT go to sea world it's a massive dissapointment.
