He went to court.
He was offered “Pretrial Intervention” by the prosecutor, which was a $300 fine, complete a 4 hour on-line course (on alcohol abuse?) that costs $25, and have the charge nolle prossed. This is what he chose.
He asked what would happen if he pled guilty and the prosecutor shrugged. I wonder if it would have been better. The max statutory fine is only $100, but the judge could have ordered community service, and/or courts costs, and he would have had that charge on his record (not terribly serious).
$325 bucks is not terrible, but it’s not nothing, especially for a college kid working a summer job to help pay for school. The whole ordeal feels more like a money maker for the city than an important law enforcement issue for the community.
I just don’t think that the drinking age should have ever been increased from 18 to 21.
