I stopped bothering with plugging nails. Simply get two cans of fix-a-flat from walmart. Put one in and roll on.
When nail falls out it may go flat again. 2nd can goes in. roll on.
This has worked for me for years on fancy and cheap tires alike.
fwiw everyone should have a can of that stuff in the trunk for flat tires in a dangerous area/bad weather/etc.

I've always heard fix-a-flat ruined your tires. I have AAA so if I have a flat/blow out I'm just calling them to come deal with it
