I've been on a lot of cruises. If you've been on one you've basically been on them all. The really massive ships are pretty impressive though. Obviously the really high dollar, small ships are probably different. I wonder what the OT's opinion on those would be.

Carnival owns HA and Princess but they are separate divisions, very different clientele.
If you're wanting upscale, try Regent, Seaborne, Crystal, Silversea. Or, small ship cruising, which is more adventure style.

Holland America has taken a serious nosedive after being purchased by Carnival. It is truly a shame as it was an outstanding cruise line for a number of years.
Still one of the best of the value cruise lines.

We just got off of a Disney Cruise. On the Disney Dream. If you're taking kids, it is perfect. The food was excellent, and there were plenty of things for the kids to do. Next time we go on one it will be at least 4-5 days and without the kids, but this was sort of a last minute birthday trip for my oldest. We booked it in January and got a good price for a family of 4.
On the booze thing, they allow you to bring yours on. You just can't drink it in common areas. I have no idea how they would enforce this as they don't check what is in your carry on bags, and there would be no way to tell if you poured something in your free soft drink cups. And with the wide selection of beer, as long as you brought on those 16 oz aluminum bottles, no one would be able to tell if you bought it from them or got it from the stash in your room.
The only thing I'm not sure about is the duty free rules. They had a huge liquor store on the boat, but if you bought it from there they wouldn't bring it to your room until the last night. Is there some law/rule about duty free stuff, or is this just their way of getting you to pay for their drinks?
