Here's Gottfried's first appearance on Conan. It was Halloween and the joke was that Gilbert was coming out dressed as Dick Cavett. Cavett does a good job of playing along, then Gottfried takes over and kills it with his jokes about late night talk show hosts, Cavett, Groucho, the X-Rated VHS of Aladdin...
