Take him fishing
For me, this was it.
Different age but I lost my dad and grandfather two weeks apart when I was 13. Dad and I would fish multiple times a week and weekends we all would go together. For a long time their friends would take me fishing on the weekends. Getting outdoors, hearing stories from their friends and being able to continue doing the things that we loved helped me cope with the loss.

Send a card and then make time to go visit him. Go fishing or something with some cigars.

Make an 'In memory of' contribution to a charity you know your friend's dad would have liked, such as to his university or church. Or, if he was an animal lover to a pet rescue shelter in his city.

You'll make the man quit his job when there's a huge deadline.
Really, though, I wouldn't know. I'm 26 and couldn't imagine losing my dad right now. That's got to be rough.
