LE and SP merged in the late 90s/early 2000s. There is no separate LE career field now.

If he wants to join the military direct him to Air Force for quality of life or coast guard for the insane bonuses currently.

By stating MOS I’m assuming he’s leaning army, and frick all that noise. This shite isn’t a dick measuring contest it’s your life, we’re all paid the same, Air Force jobs in general are often comparable to the civilian sector, where not all army jobs can say that.

Coast guard has recruitment issues and are dropping shite tons of money to deal with it, they teach their culinary guys well with advanced training, and are doing $65K bonuses and E4 within a few months since you immediately go to tech training and put on when you graduate with E5 soon after. Those roles are needed in the fleet though so he’d be on a ship and at sea early on, there are certainly jobs to avoid that, but still it will happen.

He has to score an overall of 31 to join, his line scores will determine where he best fits (MOS). Find a recruiter and talk with them and let him take the test to determine his options. Due to his age I suggest you be a part of that process to help guide him.

It’s not quite as easy to join as people make it out to be. The biggest disqualifyer is medical.

A lot of people have been laughing about studying for the ASVAB but not studying can have big consequences. If you want to be an 11B your score isn't that important but if you want to do a lot of jobs you need higher scores. You aren't going to get a 17C slot with a 40. A small time spent studying can make a big difference in the number of jobs. It is a bit like the SAT where the score matters as much as the entire 4 years in high school studying can significant change the trajectory of one's life.
