Precisely. Treating the descendants of slaves sold by the university as family isn't the beginning of reparations.

But it certainly sets the precedent. You think this won't be used by certain groups to push for "academic reparations" at other Universities, especially in the South?

It's incredibly frustrating to see just another spot taken for non-academic purposes when you work with high school kids who work incredibly hard to get into out of state, private Universities like Georgetown.

Maybe try the embassy at Benghazi for starters.

which is what?

Many universities give preference to children of staff members.

So I have no real problem with this as they localized it to "staff member slaves" if you will.

Georgetown to give preference to slave descendants

In 1838, the school sold 272 slaves who were working on plantations in southern Maryland to pay down its debts. Now, the school said it will give the descendants of those slaves "the same consideration we give members of the Georgetown community" when they apply.

So your title wasn't exactly right.

Some schools give preference to relatives of staff. I'm not sure about alumni family preference. But hey, don't decedents of Georgetown slaves qualify for similar types of preference?

The British owe me special college entrance preferential treatment due to their expulsion of my ancestors from Quebec.

Or I'll take forty acres and a mule.

You should be happy an advancement for black people means advancement for white women. Your welcome.

reparations
This is a situation too unique to put it under the blanket dialogue of "reparations." These people actually have proven specifically that their ancestors were sold for the money that specifically got Georgetown U.--pardon the pun--in the black.

This is way different from the facile "I'm black and you're white so you owe me sump'n" shite that I'm sure 90% of this board will see this as.

Good. Every other persecuted ethnic group got reparations.

Long overdue for blacks.

Don't start with me about welfare. That's an all inclusive social programs where whites are the biggest abuser of it

You have to be fricking kidding me.

frick, if I go back far enough in my lineage I had poor German and British ancestors that were indentured servants. In Maryland ironically. Time to start hollering for some reparations.
So do it, then.

Well, those kids will have to work harder now. Tough shite.

You obviously don't understand this situation or the precendent it sets.

If you think that the number of black Americans who can produce paperwork proving that their ancestors were sold specifically to keep a university afloat is going to skyrocket, then you have quite the imagination.

No, I don't. I'd they specifically sold slaves, maybe, but most aren't old enough to have that problem.

This I can understand, and I'd like to see all of it go away. Merits and merits alone, not politics.

Blacks who commit food stamp fraud, I'd guess, are more likely to commit other crimes that are very easy to prosecute. Take a look at an average prison, and you'll see what I mean.

If they're using the angle that they are the equivalent of employees/staff and many Universities/Colleges created in the late 1800s employed slaves for day to day operations, I could definitely see where it's going to get used and abused.

My larger question is also, how will they prove that they are descendants? In DC, records from the late 1800s are probably better than in most parts of the country but most people who have done work on ancestry/lineage can tell you that records get pretty sketchy and often you have to rely on census data alone.

Like I said, it's just frustrating when you deal with college admissions on a regular basis.

Why they prosecute blacks for everything else. Only young white males can rape and don't face jail time because the judges think jail would be too hard on them.
