I think you are giving the Chinese too much credit here. That's certainly most likely.
I think the other option is they have no fricking idea when it got out. Isn't it possible someone that was asymptomatic in the lab leaked it out?

Well I’m assuming that the lab workers are monitored closely and their symptoms monitored so that they would know the general time it got out
But my overall point is it’s highly unlikely the Chinese no exactly when this started. I mean it’s not like they already had swab tests and antibody tests available right away to start tracing. They had nothing for like a month.
