I suggest a good Swiss army knife.
I have 2 Victorinox. I never carry them. No pocket clip so it sits in the bottom of your pocket.
And the ones w multiple tools are slip joint. Takes 2 hands to open and aren't as safe as locking knives.

I literally have one of those knives in my pocket and the other one sitting on my nightstand at home.
I have enjoyed my Kershaw knives and have purchased them as gifts for a number of people.

Update:
After the incredible and nearly overwhelming input from the OT baws, I ran by the sporting goods store and was able to hold and feel some of the fine suggestions from the board. I must say, you pointed me in the right direction. I almost felt like playing rock paper scissors to make the my decision.
The final purchase was:
Benchmade Bugout - Size and ease of use seemed spot on. Price was on the high end but I think he'll really enjoy it.
ALSO,
I grabbed the Spyderco Delica 4 with the Emerson opener for my son. Not as expensive or quite as nice as the Benchmade, but it'll be a great gift and should last him many years. I really like the eyelet to open. Super easy and intuitive. Not as easy to close as the Benchmark, but he's a young man so he can expend the extra engergy.
