Management/Workers... Do you think the Family Medical Leave Act is abused more often than actual times it legit needs to be used?

I work in manufacturing (yeah I know blue collar, not a millionaire like most of ot) we have major issues with people being on fmla and missing monday/fridays or pay days all the time. Never been on it, never thought of it but from what people say it isn't to hard to get approved. I personally think it's stupid and worthless lazy people hide behind it. Thanks Bill Clinton haha.

I don't think you can call in FMLA due to a Monday hangover

How do they go on FMLA without proper paperwork?

FMLA isn't supposed to be for a single day. It's for when you're out for a few weeks or longer.

Only if he has all the paperwork approved by his doctor. I had to have a ton of paperwork signed by my doc when I have used FMLA before. Once for a badly sprained foot, other after surgery.

I would imagine even more paperwork is needed if it is a chronic issue.

Absolutely they do and it completely wrecks our labor schedules.

As with most things, it’s intent is a good thing, but put it in the hands of the lazy and they will milk it until it’s dry.

You can use FMLA for a single day if it is a legit chronic issue. Or if you are caring for a family member with a legit issue.

This is correct. When I worked at a casino, I had an employee who's daughter had heart issues and she would use FMLA when she needed to take her to appointments and such. Of course, those appointments usually fell on the Friday of holiday weekends and opening of hunting season.

I was a manager at a previous job. People would get intermittent FMLA for either themselves or care of a sick family member. Some really did use it correctly but others abused the hell out of it. Staffing was a nightmare because of FMLA. I agree with the premise but the abuse made me hate what FMLA did to my staffing.

They added 4 weeks of baby bonding time for dads where I work. You have 6 months to use the 4 weeks. People do abuse it to take a random week of vacation here and there and I have no say so in the matter.

They don't call it Friday /Monday leave act for nothing. But seriously, some companies have a overly stringent attendance policy. So screw em. Take off when you need to.

So the employee should just decide to show up when he wants to or feels like... im glad we do not have conscription... oh wait those who abuse fmla wouldn't qualify and those that did would probably be in custody for failure to train within a few hours.
