To stay safe, the NPS recommends visitors stay at least 25 yards from all large animals, including bison, elk, deer, moose and coyotes.
If a bison decides to charge your arse, 25 yards won't do shite unless there's a tree to climb, a culvert to crawl into, or building to get inside.

I will say that you can accidently walk up on a bison in Yellowstone pretty easily. We spent a week there a while back and stayed at several lodges in the park. One morning, while staying at Ole Faithful lodge cabins, we walked out of the dining room at Old Faithul Inn, heading back to the cabin, turned a corner, and there was one standing in the parking lot, 30 ft away. Of course, if you don't frick with them, they tend to keep grazing and pay you little mind.
