im told the military will ship vehicles home for service members stationed outside the USA, not sure if that is really true or not

My next door neighbor in Sonoma was lt cmdr in gulf war.
He had been shipped out from Hawaii to ship. after his tour, his duty station was mainland. Hawaii plates.

You are assuming they shipped the whole vehicle, not just the plate

It's true. Had my vehicle shipped to Germany and back and Hawaii and back at no charge to me.
