Cause of death should be listed on the death certificate and the next of kin should have this.
But would the death certificate just list "heart failure" (or whatever ceased to function) as the cause and not put overdose on there at all?
OP, I think the only way to truly find out is if you ask a close family member or friend.

Ask Darth to find out for you next time he's down that way.

Several years ago the Times-Picayune used to put the cause of death in most of the obits, but stopped doing it for some reason.
Sad day. I used to read them during breakfast to satisfy my morbid curiosity.

Can't tell if this is horrible advice or pretty funny joke. Well played.

Louisiana Bar Journal used to list cause of death of the lawyers who died - stopped doing it when a few died of aids.

If they're young and didn't die due to crash or sickness, assume they overdosed.

Either way, sorry to hear about your friend.

It depends who orders the autopsy. If the family chooses to have it done then the autopsy results are only released to them. If the autopsy is ordered by the law such as in unexpected deaths or dead on arrival scenes then this autopsy information is available to the public at a certain time.

How is it any of your business how someone died? If it wasn't in the obit, the family obviously doesn't want to share. Respect that.
