Most all of the time peoples' heart stops beating and their lungs stop breathing...not necessarily in that order.

I was in ICU drawing some blood several years ago from a prisoner. Armed guard watching. the prisoner looked like he had been beaten almost to death.... well he had been beaten almost to death. He told me prisoners and guards did it. (I didn't ask). Asked me to pray for him cause they were going to finish the job when he was released. Two weeks later I hear a prisoner at that prison was beaten to death. Purposefully, didn't find out his name.
