That's why it would be better to not have a system based on insurance. The dental industry is not dependent on insurance and they seem to be doing well. A cash pay system with decrease costs and expedite care. No penalty or incentives to either have or not have insurance just personal accountability

You get a bill in the mail. If you don't pay it goes to a bill collector. Then the hospital system will not treat you for anything. Need chemo? Go to another hospital. Then garnishing your wages along with any future tax refunds.

when it's illegal to not have health insurance?

Is it illegal to take money out of your IRA early? No. You pay a fine for it. Being uninsured not illegal.

Except there are tons of people (even middle-class!)who can't afford dental care. Dentists are doing well...

We would have been better off not having insurance at all. Have to pay $2K for an ER visit. We'd have owed ZERO if we'd have been uninsured.

I'm assuming that 2,000 is what insurance allowed, and it's coming from your deductible. Without insurance, they would have billed you 10,000 (for real), and you'd have to call every provider to beg for a cash discount. In my case, that would have meant the ER, the medical group they contract with, and the radiologist. This is not a defense of insurance; it's an indictment of the whole fricked up system, which needs to be scrapped and rebuilt in a sane way.

I guess he paid the Obamacare penalty or whatever instead. Wound up in the hospital for a kidney stone and is on the hook for $34K.

The issue is that getting a kidney stone treated should never cost $34K. Instead of trying to get everyone health insurance, we need to look at the medical industry that overcharge the frick out of services, medicine and supplies. The pharma business is filthy as shite.

get sick and go to the ER, then sign up for Obamacare since thete is no such thing as a preexisting condition. (I work in insurance)

You can only sign up once a year unless you have a qualifying life event. Shouldn't you know this?

And why wouldn't you sign up right before you go to the ER once sick?

And for person injury lawsuits, the damages sued for are the trumped-up fake non-insurance prices.

Pharma is only 10% of total health care expenditures. The whole system that has developed here needs a reset.

Is it that they can't afford it or that they don't make it I priority. I just went to my dentist yesterday. $125. Unfortunately I had a cavity so I will have to go back for 175. I'm willing to pay this because it is a priority for me. Almost anyone can set aside 50$ a month for dental care. Just most people rather buy 2 cases of bud light

Ok, I found the policy online. LINK The lady we spoke with yesterday was wrong - there is an income threshold for financial assistance, but it's not the poverty line like someone said earlier. It's actually 200% of poverty level.

quote:

Family Size Annual
1 $24,120
2 $32,480
3 $40,840
4 $49,200
5 $57,560
6 $65,920
7 $74,280
8 $82,640

quote:

Patient’s whose income falls below the limits stated above will be eligible for a full discount of their hospital bill

So let's say a guy is married with 4 kids and makes $65K. How does it make any sense for that guy to buy health insurance, when he (or anyone in his family) can go to the ER for free anytime?

Fairly certain you would have personally been billed. If you dont pay, your credit is fricked.

That would depend on a person's income. See post above yours.

To be clear, my insurance allowed 20% of what they charged it. The doctor's group was the worst, billing 9x what was allowed. Scumbags. There's an article about this on CNBC.com today based on a Johns Hopkins study, and among other things, it talks about the overcharging and negotiations I mentioned that cash patients are faced with.

No. You are taxed if you do not have insurance and pay taxes. It is not illegal to not have insurance.

The hospital will typically put a lien on your property when you register. If you have no assets, no problem. If you are an OT baller, they will take your house, boat, plane, etc and charge you full rack rate (sometimes 5x the insurance allowed).

The amount of hoops you have to jump through to get decent medical care in 'the greatest country in the world' is staggering
