Came across this website this morning.

What does everyone think of this push for higher wages? Fast food employees wanting $15/hour.

It will spur innovation to automate every fast food joint into a big vending machine and thereby improve the product and add to the unemployed population.

You're worth what someone is "willing " to pay you for your services.

whats the age demographic for fast food workers?

teenagers don't need a lot of money; they might be dangerous if they start getting paid too much.

Was hoping it was a thread about raising the distance back to 15 rounds instead of 12.

There has to be a bottom. If you raise the bottom to $15/hour, then everything will simply adjust upward. A loaf of bread and a gallon of milk will cost twice as much. The rich can afford the increase, the poor will still be at the bottom (which hasn't changed in terms of spending power, $15 is worth what $7.50 used to be worth), and the middle class get screwed.

Not everyone is worth $15 an hour. When my daughter was in 10th grade she had a real bad semester in math. I told her "lets go to McDonalds and talk about it". When we got there I told her to watch the people behind the counter... after a few minutes she asked what was she supposed to be watching. I asked her which of those jobs did she think she could do?

She just stared at me. I then told her that if she didnt take her education seriously, this is the kind of job she could expect to get. I said if you cant work hard and stay focused in school, why would an employer hire you to sit around and not work hard at your job.

She changed her outlook and made A-B honor roll from then until she graduated. In college now and doing well.

The sad thing about the fast food workers (in our area they are primarily minorities), is that if they had studied hard in high school and made good grades there would have been scholarships available and they could get higher paying jobs. But they were lazy in high school and didnt want to be the nerdy kid. Well they will probably end up working for the nerdy kid someday.

Expect the workforce to shift if that happens. I know skilled laborers that bust their arse and make less than $15 an hour. If the this gets passed these guys will take over these jobs with there work ethic and many holding those jobs now will be out of work. There will be a huge increase in building construction because laborers will be making $20+ an hour which in turn increase carpenter rate etc, etc.

One of the dudes from Rae Sremmurd started working at the Mickie D's near my house, gave me 13 chicken nuggies when I ordered ten. I couldn't understand what the frick he was saying, pretty sure he said here you go my ****, but I would gladly pay him 15 dollars an hour.

Good on you, pops.

It's pretty simple economics. I don't know why anyone but extremely naive and shortsighted people would push for wages to double overnight.

I would consider working at fast food part time as a second job if they made $15/hr. There are aspects of this that I don't think they are considering such as the fact that most fast food employees suck will be more difficult to cover up.

If the minimum wage was such a sound economic and financial principle with no adverse effects, then why not just make it $100/hr? $200/hr?

It isn't quite as simple as everything just adjusting upward. Inflation wouldn't just be 1:1. In this country we have one of the larger imbalances of income in the developed world, with the top earners taking in a disproportionately large percentage of overall output. Ideally, a law like this would just take away all the excess that the very top keeps. The problem is that there is no way that I know of to predict exactly how the market dynamics will react. And ultimately, you're right in that it will probably be the middle class that ends up getting screwed and paying for the lower class's increase in real wages.

It's already passed here in Seatown as minimum wage and being implemented over a period of time.

I like my $8.50 Chipotle burrito. If they start getting paid $15, they're going to lose my business because there's no way I'm paying $17 for a friggin' burrito. No customers, no job. $7.50 vs $0.00. Get a better education and don't expect a fast food job to become your career.
