Yes. Outside of union, which effectively doesn't exist in the South, benefits are shite for a ton of trade workers. Many are even 1099'd (despite it not being kosher with the IRS).

TBH, your grandpa probably doesn't give a rat's arse whether or not this is a 1980's rate market, or a 1990's job market. Presumably he's insulated. Those are issues for folks in the job or loan market.
