Aren’t wages kinda low there? Can you get a decent house in a decent neighborhood for a family for under $250k?

I've looked into this area. COL is slightly lower than the BR metro. Not sure if salaries are lower. They have more big corporations than we do for sure.

You get a lot more for your money up there. We’ve looked at houses and while the wages aren’t any lower, the COL is probably 25-30% less than Baton Rouge, Nola, Lafayette and Northshore. And they have great public schools, great parks and outdoor public venues. But you also get that ugly red brick/rock/cookie cutter house thing they love so much up this way. Bleh

My kid is almost in HS so we aren't likely going anywhere for the next 5 years.

I'd prefer a little more seasonal weather and terrain than Louisiana can offer so I've convinced my wife to relocate afterwards. I'd like Montana but she hates the cold so we are comprising to somewhere like this.

Sounds intriguing. Seems like people have caught on to the decent places and America and have driven real estate prices up in those area to an unsustainable level in many cases.

Just poking around on Zillow and the houses that are less than $250k appear to be shoddy. I like my remodeled 70's brick home but that was built during a time when refinery baws were ballin'.
