Pot... Kettle. Kettle... Pot. Jumped the gun a little didn't we. At least I looked it up and corrected it immediately after I posted it. You COPIED a post and waited 15 minutes to correct me. I think we know who the smug one is here. Not to mention, I missed the Weimar Republic by a few years. He missed National Socialism by well over a decade.

When you said "this was the Weimar Republic" what did you mean? It almost sounded like you were calling the Third Reich the Weimar Republic. That's not what you meant was it?

come on guys the error was obvious but did not distract from the thread this should not be about calling people out for meaningless errors although I agree that the time line was messed up originally

No. I'm well aware that the Third Reich was started by the Nazis (see my post referencing 1933). I thought the Weimar Republic was during WWI, but I quickly recognized my
error and corrected it. My point is the thread deals with Zeppelins and WWI, 20 years before the Nazis came to power.

Don't forget the greatest WWII movie of all time, which looks similar to WWI:

Pink Floyd's The Wall

Which is funny since many of the songs are based on Roger Waters' father's death and he was killed in WWII, not WWI.

I'm posting on my phone and got a phone call when I was mid-response. When it ended and I came back, the page had refreshed and it was gone but I had already copied the text of your post.

You deserved to be called out for being a douche to someone for being ignorant when you were ignorant yourself.

While his mistake was a big one, regarding Nazis in WWI, yours was pretty big too, especially for someone trying to flex his knowledge about history. Thinking the Weimar Republic was a belligerent in WWI is a pretty big deviation from reality for someone fashioning themselves as educated, as you clearly do.

So about 5 million cows were used? That's a lot of cow shite!

No. The war scenes in The Wall depict the Battle of Anzio which was from WWII.

Fine, I'm a hypocrite. Everyone is to some extent. I'll put my knowledge of history up against anyone at anytime. However, I done here. I'm taking the advice given above and will stop detracting from the historical discussion. Good day, Sir.

Ok. I was just not understanding what you were saying about the Weimar Republic.

I will correct one thing, WWI was not 20 years before the Nazis. WWII itself was barely 20 years past WWI

Depends on when your definition of WWII started. I'm using the traditional definition of September 1939, when Germany invaded Poland. WWI started in 1914. So, give or take 25 years. I realize the Japanese had been in Southeast Asia since the early 1930s, but I was referring to the war in Europe.

Some historians don't even separate the two wars. They group World War I and World War II together into one gigantic conflict that started in 1914, took a break from 1919 until the mid-30s, before continuing on until 1945.

My only issue with describing it as such is the fact that different regimes were involved. However, in historical context, I can see the benefit. The Nazis rise to power was partially a result of the embarrassment suffered during WWI.

I likewise was referring to the war in Europe. The only difference was I was referring to the timespan between the end of fighting in WWI, November 11, 1918 and the beginning of fighting in WWII, September 1, 1939 which puts the timespan between the two wars at 20 years and 10 months.

Interesting, coming from someone who just said this:

quote:

I thought the Weimar Republic was during WWI

And who also said this:

As you so astutely stated (probably after checking Wikipedia), the Nazis came to power in 1933. Twenty years before that, Archduke Ferdinand was happily banging ladies-in-waiting in Vienna and the idea of a war encompassing all of Europe was absurd.

What I'm getting at is that 20 years didn't elapse between WWI and the Nazis coming to power. Again, you have no idea what you're talking about.

The top of the Empire State Building has a 200-foot mooring mast that was meant to dock zeppelin airships—then thought to be the vehicle of the future.

It ended up docking only one dirigible due to the fact that the idea was so ill-conceived, it didn't account for how the winds coming off the building made it too dangerous to anchor an airship (let alone have people walk out on the 102nd floor). It was more of a stunt to ensure that the Empire State Building would be the world’s tallest building.

What's the history behind your username?

It's the name I go by in real life.

My grandmother's maiden name was Katie Sayre. She was from up around Mangham, Louisiana.

It was my father's middle name, and then mine (I'm a Jr.)

Instead of having two Williams around the house (our first name), I was called by my middle name, Sayre.

I always use it online when I can instead of something made up. Seeing as it's not a common name, it's unusual to find anyone else already using it.
