Auto-rotation. The air from falling spins the rotors and the pilot pulls the collective at the right time to stop the fall.
Got to ride with a Ft. Rucker test pilot when he did that in an OH13 nearly 50 years ago.
The test pilots had a contest going to see who could auto-rotate backwards for the longest distance.
