re: Explain why cable providers don’t just let you select your channel listing.

Because the carriers realized long ago that there are crap channels that no one would willfully pay for.
MTV, Logo, MSNBC, ... you get the idea.
If you want a "good" channel, then you'll pay for a bunch crap ones.

Because the price you would pay for just select channels would be as much or more than what you’re paying now for 140.
This seems plausible, but could you explain how and/or why?

Being able to pick individual channels would kill cable companies as they are today
What I was suggesting is a new company that’s better than the current ones. Hulu, Firestick etc are all new and they are meeting a need of the market.
Still not sure why a company can’t negotiate for one channel and give it a solid boost in revenue.

This doesn’t seem correct. Why would a business want to use a profitable wing to subsidize one that is a poor performer?
They would be incentivized to cut the crap channel and their overall profit would be higher.

quote:You answered your own question it appears
cable providers maximize their money by getting kickbacks based on the stations people subscribe to, and by not individualizing the channel listing they increase total income/subscription base.

Because half of TV would suddenly cease to exist.
The amount your cable company charges but doesn't tell you about for ESPN basically pays for the shitty channels.
Of you could choose a la cart, then all public access, the CW, and BET would dissappear over night.

Again, why do I care if these channels disappear? If they are popular, let those who want to keep them pay to keep them.

I’d love it, but they’d go broke.
This. They have to pay all of the network providers i.e. CBS, NBC, Fox etc and the price is based on the number of subscriber households the cable provider will add. You have to buy the packages they offer.
frick ATT Uverse & Direct TV. You should not have to call about your damn bill jumping in price every three months!

Dolla Dolla Bills

Because the cable company can charge you for them by bundling them with shite you actually want.

The value is in the content, not the service. That's why all the fricking cable companies are merging with all the fricking networks. In a free market I pay Comcast to move data from my content providers, that I separately pay, to my device. It already works like that with Netflix, Hulu, etc. But all the legacy networks and content providers are in bed with the cable companies to leach you of money for shitty content that no one wants. Next to our healthcare industry it's the most broken down piece of shite market in the US.
