And you vastly underestimate the speed and the range of a horse archer. A knight is not catching a horse archer in a duel dude.

If you have to retreat from combat, you no longer hold the territory. You lose.

They are both mounted. At some point, terrain or exhaustion is going to force actual combat, which the knight will win.

"Run away" isn't a long term strategy for actually winning.
