Eugene OR restaurant recs, things to see

I'll be in Eugene late August for a day and a half. Any suggestions on what to do, where to eat, etc? I won't have a car so will be spending my time in Eugene or close to it.
Any cool towns cab distance from Eugene?
It looks like UofO and breweries are the main attractions.

I was there last week for the first time. Had a meeting and was only there one night. I made an attempt to find a good hotel with walking distance of resturants/bars but didn't fare so well. Stayed at a little quirky joint right by campus that named their rooms after famous composers intead of giving them numbers. Room was neat I guess but tiny. Ate at the Italian place in its lobby and walked to a couple of bars right by it. None were overly impressive. Hopefully you'll get some good insight on where to go. I'll likely be going back
