Thought this would be of interest to the OT. Apparently, Google has already been swamped with takedown requests. If this hits America, anyone plan on taking advantage of this? Which OTer will be the first?

quote:

Google Inc is already getting requests to remove objectionable personal information from its search engine after Europe's top court ruled that subjects have the "right to be forgotten," a source familiar with the matter said on Wednesday.

The world's No. 1 Internet search company has yet to figure out how to handle an expected flood of requests after Tuesday's ruling, said the source, who is not authorized to speak on the record about the issue.

The decision by the Court of Justice of the European Union, which affects the region's 500 citizens, requires that Internet search services remove information deemed "inadequate, irrelevant or no longer relevant." Failure to do so can result in fines.

Google will need to build up an "army of removal experts" in each of the 28 European Union countries, including those where Google does not have operations, the source said. Whether those experts merely remove controversial links or actually judge the merits of individual take-down requests are among the many questions Google has yet to figure out, the source said.

Europeans can submit take-down requests directly to Internet companies rather than to local authorities or publishers under the ruling.

"God damn the continent of Europe. It is of merely antiquarian interest. Rome is only a few years behind Tyre and Babylon." -- F. Scott Fitzgerald, letter to Edmund Wilson, 1921

Would it not be business that lobbied for this? I highly doubt that this is over actual individuals' personal information.

Exactly my point... This isn't about someone's Facebook profile they want deleted, so who pushed the decision?

How would google's competitors benefit from limiting available information?

I'm seeing a clear motive here but it's the complete opposite of the one you're suggesting.

How is this corporatism?

From the articles I read, the rationale was privacy and a "right to be forgotten".

Yeah, they start 2 world wars that we get dragged into and even after that condescend to us.

There is a reason that the people who built America left Europe.

And yet stupid Americans still treat Europe like it is the center of enlightenment. And yes, I've been all over the place. Talking with actual Europeans will quickly end any romantic notions of the place.

That's how I interpreted it. If someone on the OT made a claim, say they had cancer, a 9 inch penis, their trailer burning down or banging their sister-in-law, they could request that Google or any search engine make those remarks unsearchable. I wonder, under this order, would TD be required to remove a user's posts?

I think SFP mentioned it above, but Google nor Tigerdroppings forced that poster to post or make those claims. That poster submitted that information to an infrastructure Tigerdroppings owns (or most likely leases) and Google has the ability to index.

I understand big government and corporatism and this ruling is neither. This is European individualism getting preference over property rights (and I'd argue this is an absolute rebuke of corporatism- at least of Google and the other big search engines)

It's completely naive to think this is driven by individuality. How much would Firestone have paid to press the reset button on tire blowouts a few years ago?
