We owe roughly $3,000 on my wife's car and they're going to give us right around $18,500 for the buy back.
What year/model, if you don't mind?

2011 Jetta Sportwagen TDI. She has about 95k miles on it. Basically, with this buy-back, the car has depreciated only a few thousand dollars since we bought it used a few years back.

The EPA needs to be scaled back by at least 50%. It's a prime example of all the fake climate concern being used to justify more laws, more regulations, and more government control. It's just a sham.

EPA needs to be doubled in size/funding tbh..If you want to be able to hunt or fish 20 years from now

Here's what I don't understand, are diesels not cleaner than gas already? I

I can tell you from my time working in a petroleum lab that diesel is not cleaner than gas. Not even close. When I had to run a full slate of tests on diesel, I had to run an ash test which is used to determine the level of ashes it would produce after being burned. That's why diesel engines have a whole lot more filters than gas engines.

I'm ignorant on this but they prefer diesels in Europe because my understanding is they are cleaner?

The reason is how pollution is counted. Diesel offers improved mileage and therefore less CO2 emissions which they count as "clean." European countries tax the hell out out engines by size and mileage not mention taxing gas to ridiculous levels. On the other hand diesel produces a lot more NOx which is actually worse than CO2, a plant food.
