How dark is your skin? This determines which side of town you want to live. If you are light/lily white,stay to the east of the post office. You would grocery shop at Cades and not Joyces. Mardi gras would be enjoyed in another town.

I know a lot of people from St Martinville and Catahoula. Not bad places. Just small and not much going on. Get a boat and cruise the Teche.

I'm from the area, if you're looking for rural area with country living then St. Martinville is good. Just make sure it's not on the "dark" side of town. These guys are saying live in Lafayette, I wouldn't do it unless you like to deal with traffic. Broussard / Youngsville area is good also.
