He seems the type that learns a term or a tiny bit about something ("rooftop") and thinks he is suddenly an expert. He makes huge leaps (visual-Gary leaping) and thinks he has a great insight.
Ex. Gary learns that guns are used in hunting. Buys a 25 cal. Pistol to get 'hisself' a deer.

Well that's just asinine. And regardless, I'm sure that Matherne's does a lot of business with the downtown office crowd. Obviously I don't know percentages, but I work downtown and whenever I need something for the office like coffee I head over there.
