The funeral home does this before the casket is closed & moved for burial.
They give it to a designated family member.

If that were my mom, yes. We all know from talking to her that she wants my sister to have her wedding ring and pass it down.

That's a diamonoid. If you bring it for appraisal, that costs more than the ring is worth.

A family member took a diamond ring off my grandmother right before they closed her up. I have it for my daughter.
