You are the a-hole here. Maybe not the only a-hole given the situation, but blocking a lane is an a-hole move.
In a perfect world people wouldn't race to get ahead in a situation where a lane is closed. We would just use the asphalt available and let people zipper.

So the lesson is “slow down and wait your turn!”? That’s pretty dumb. You are blocking people from using all available lanes to their fullest extent, which results in less traffic and fewer accidents.
